Why SOT Exists

When Plans Break Down, Capability Matters Most

SOT was built for people who go to real places—remote coastline, backcountry trails, rough roads, and low-margin environments—and want to be genuinely prepared for what those places require.

We are not a tour company, and we are not an influencer brand. We are a small, instructor-led consultancy that helps individuals, families, and small groups build skill, judgment, and practical readiness.

Our work is grounded in coastal Maine, where conditions change quickly, service is unreliable, and poor decisions carry real consequences. That is the environment that shapes the standard.

SOT is based in Kittery and serves Portland, the Maine Seacoast, and southern Maine.

How We Think

The Philosophy Behind the Work

Competence is Freedom

The more capable you are, the more options you have when things stop going as planned. Skill and judgment are the only tools that do not depend on signal, battery, or luck.

Preparation is Respect

Preparation shows respect—for the terrain, for the people you travel with, and for the rescue resources that should not have to solve preventable problems.

The Algorithm Won't Save You

Technology is useful, but it is not a substitute for judgment. When service drops, weather shifts, or conditions change, training, map literacy, and sound decisions matter more than the screen in your hand.

The Outdoors Rewards the Prepared

The outdoors does not care who feels confident. It favors the people who prepared ahead of time, paid attention to conditions, and brought the judgment to adjust when the plan changed.

What We Offer

Practical Instruction for Real Conditions

Every service is built around practical application, small groups, and environments that demand honest preparation. No gear hype. No adventure clichés.

Personalized Readiness Planning

A one-on-one assessment of your current capabilities, equipment, and intended use. We identify gaps, build a realistic plan, and help close the distance between where you are and where you want to be.

Practical First Aid & Emergency Response

Emergency response instruction built around realistic scenarios, not certification checkboxes alone. Assessment, stabilization, and decision-making when help is delayed or far away.

Communications & Navigation

Radio protocols, map and compass fundamentals, GPS redundancy, and communication planning. Because cell service is a convenience, not a safety system.

Trip Planning & Readiness

Route assessment, weather interpretation, equipment review, and contingency planning for remote travel. We help you think through the trip before the trip starts making decisions for you.

Vehicle Readiness & Self-Recovery

Practical skills for reducing risk, improving readiness, and handling common stuck situations with sound judgment and basic tools. Built for overland travel, rough access roads, and places where outside help is not immediate.

Applied Skills Coaching

Hands-on, scenario-based instruction tailored to your environment, group, and objectives. Practical training built around use, decision-making, and repetition—no shortcuts.

Who We Work With

For People Who Want Real Capability

SOT is for people who want practical preparedness built around real use—not generic advice, not gear for gear's sake, and not one-size-fits-all instruction. The goal is simple: better judgment, better capability, and more confidence when conditions are less forgiving than expected.

Outdoor Enthusiasts

Hikers, backpackers, paddlers, and others who spend meaningful time outside and want to be better prepared for what those environments demand.

Overlanders & 4WD Travelers

People who travel by vehicle into places where support is limited and self-reliance matters.

Remote Travelers

People planning remote, international, or logistically complex travel who want practical readiness, not just a packing list.

Families & Small Groups

Families and small groups who want everyone on the trip to be more prepared, more useful, and more confident.
